(We are going to make some generalizations… can you handle that?)

NFL fans.

They sit and watch a most likely scripted game and yell loudly as things they can’t control play out. They make sure to wear all the insanely overpriced gear. They have this or that superstition that if they wear or do the right things, maybe their team will win. All this, then they are fat.

What the heck?

The people you are viewing in the stadium couldn’t care less what you think of them. As long as you keep buying the new trinket they produce, they wouldn’t care if everything you loved burned to the ground. That’s a bit dramatic, but it is also true.

“Can you beleive that <NFL player> kneeled during the national anthem!!???”

Bro, they don’t care about your country. These aren’t the polymaths of the Ancient Greeks wrestling to see who is the best wrestler today, and then the best philosipher tomorrow. These are people who are min-maxing being good at <sport>.

I’m not against sports in general. Obviously sports might make you exersize and can keep you from being the weird fat armchair-quarterback from the lede. Compition is a good thing:

Who can throw this rock the farthest?

Who is the fastet runner?

But “who can make the most interesting game to watch, so we can sell the most merch” doesn’t lead to an interesting sports game. You see this with the WNBA. People aren’t as interested in the WNBA as the NBA. So the players have to drum up drama to maintain relevance. As far as I know the drama is like this:

  • WNBA won’t define what the “W” stands for
  • Some players say that a women is somebody with “XX” chromosomes
  • Some players are retarted1 and don’t think that
  • Retard player abuses normal player on court and refs don’t do anything about it, then the assalient claims rasicsm (for no apparent reason)

Woa guys, that really does sound like an interesting way to spend my Sunday, Monday, and Thursday! I can’t beleive I’m missing out on all that sportsballing!

Who knows if it’s all top-down orchistrated to drive engagement, probably not. But then your other option is that putting that many entitled people together spawns drama ex-nihilo. So why are you still watching a bunch of rich, entitled people throw a ball around a court?

So then besides the fact that the “sport” itself is mostly fake, you have the superstition from the fans. Assuming you are Christan, superstition is quite dumb. Personally, I don’t see the difference between superstition and divination.

Divination: Depending on how the tea leaves sit in the bottom of this cup determines if you will have a safe journey to Canterbery.

Supersition: Depending on if wear my Jordan Love jersey or not, he will get injured again. Because last time I wore it he got injured.

And last time I checked Deuteronomy 18:10, 1 Samuel 15:23, Acts 16:16, divination was not allowed. You have the free will to change your future, they have their free will for their future, and the rest is in God’s hands. Not the hands of what clothes you wore today.
